Consul Werle lays on a reception in honour of the return home of his son Gregers. At the reception Gregers meets a childhood friend of his, Hjalmar Ekdal, who is married to Gina, a former maid servant of the Werle family. Hjalmar is unaware that Werle had an affair with his wife and that the 14-year old Hedwig is not his child. Gregers moves in with the Ekdals with the intention of letting the unsuspecting Hjalmar and his family share the "happiness of truth".
