Edith wants a better world. That is what she is fighting for - in public with political commitment and at home in her diary with the weapons of her fantasy.
Reality is different, when Edith describes it in her diary. Paul, her husband leaves her. Chris, her son, turns into an alcoholic. Uncle Georg, old and infirm, brought into the house by Paul, has to be looked after and cared for by Edith right to the very end. Increasingly, Edith flees from this environment into the intact and cheerful world of her diary, which she gradually confuses with reality. Before Chris, who had already left normality behind long ago, is commiitted to a psychiatric clinic, she tries to save him with her love. But Edith's fate decides otherwise.
